A Midsummer Night’s Run

Midsummer Nights Run Pacer SignWe’re less than 3 weeks away from Toronto’s most interesting event of the Summer.  It’s not the premiere event; that would go to the Acura 10 Miler I’d think, but it certainly is the most fun. And it servers as a great tune-up leading to a fall marathon. Many runners use this race and a prep for the Scotia Toronto Waterfront Marathon which is what I plan to do.

For many other runners, it is their goal race as 30k is the maximum some people like to run, which is fine and this race serves as a great goal race. That is, if you are ready for it. Which often we are not for 2 reasons. Racing in the heat of Summer is a tough task, and add to the fact that this race is in the evening when it can still linger in the high 20’s or even 30’s. This event can make us so aware that we are better suited to race in the cool mornings.

I know most of you, my running mates, have 30k Personal Bests from the 30k Around The Bay in the Hammer. And that weather is usually crap in the other direction. But, it’s cool and despite rain and sometimes snow, that weather yields faster times as our bodies perform better.

This year looks like it may be a good one for the Midsummer’s run. We have had such a long stretch of hot days that we much be acclimatized better than ever. The other factor though is the race day eating. After talking to hundreds of runners, most do not seem to be happy with their evening races. But if you go into this one knowing that it is about the spirit of the run, the atmosphere, good friends and a great location, you should come away happy.

I have been the Head Pace Bunny, I mean Pace Fairy, for this year’s event and I can say we have a great, full fleet of fairies. If you are running this event you’ll be happy to know we have pacers for spots in the 15k event (1:10, 1:20, 1:30, 1:45, 2:00) and for the 30k event (2:00, 2:15, 2:30, 2:45, 3:00, 3:15, 3:30, 3:45)

Anyway, I am looking forward to it, and we’ll see if I can get through the race this year without stomach issues.

What about you, will you be there?

And for your enjoyment, here is a glimpse of previous Pace Fairying…

Crazy mad runner, wanting to be fitter and faster but too busy to do it right. Still, I keep trying.

I’m in for the 15K! Running purely for fun (as you say…August…evening race…yuck!) – I hear it’s a great party!

Oh yes, the post race party is great. let’s hope for NO RAIN as that can put a damper on the situation. In previous years when it rained, we headed to Murphy’s Law at Queen and Kingston rd.
